SPX AND THE DIGNITY OF LABOR
The Expo: SPX 2002 is currently seeking volunteers. Those of us dutifully maintaining long-standing vows of poverty will be cheered by the prospect of "a free name badge, free admission to all days of the show, and invitations to the private events." Hello, my name is name tag!

BAY LADY BAY
Cartoonists figure big in this year's Ladyfest Bay Area, happening July 24 - 28 in San Francisco, CA. On July 25, Dame Darcy will host a workshop on "Doll-making and Crafting" at the city's LGBT Center. Darcy, Trina Robbins, Jennifer Feinberg, and Molly Kiely will facilitate a "Women in Comix/Comix in Women" panel at the Pond Gallery on July 28th. In association with Ladyfest, the Pond Gallery is also hosting "POW! The Power of Women in Illustrative and Sequential Art" from July 19 to August 11, featuring Roberta Gregory, Dame Darcy, Trina Robbins, Ariel Schrag and other female cartoonists. The gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, July 26.

THE MASTER'S TABLE
The New York Times reports on the fine art industry's recent interest in the Crumb family, evidenced by a spate of upcoming and unrelated gallery exhibits featuring Robert, Sophie, Jesse, Maxon and Aline Kominsky-Crumb. According to the article, Aline Kominsky-Crumb currently makes "jewel-encrusted, ornate shrines inspired by her travels to India and Mexico." Sophie, now 20, lives in Paris and has written and illustrated a children's book called "The Secret of Joe the Weasel." Coincidentally, a strip by Robert Crumb (and inspired by Sophie) is on display this week at the Comics Journal's website as a preview of the magazine's upcoming summer special.
