ART ATTACK
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Art Spiegelman discusses his new September 11th-themed comic strip, "In the Shadow of No Towers," set to debut on September 6 in the German newspaper "Die Zeit." Traumatized by the events so close to his lower Manhattan home, Spiegelman tells Deutsche Welle, "I realized 'Spiegelman, you've been working on essays and a play but comics only get occassional attention from you. You are gonna to die and you spent the last years without doing comics at all.'" The DW reporter presumes that Spiegelman's new strip will not be published in America (Spiegelman: "I am too European for Americans"). However, today's New York Newsday reports that the strip will also begin running on the back page of the weekly Forward's September 6 issue, "[t]he first of eight monthly full-page installments." Reduced panel excerpts on DW's website reveal that the strip is composed in full color.

DELCOURT'S "11TH DAY"
The Associated Press, apparently confused by the meaning of the word "publish," reports on a new French graphic novel about September 11th. "Le 11e Jour" tells children's book illustrator Sandrine Revel's true account of her experiences in New York City. The book is published by Delcourt in the traditional hardbound, 48 page graphic album format and was released to European bookstores on August 29th. Sample art is on display at Delcourt's website.

THE! BEST! OF! TIME!
Lynda Barry's latest autobiographical graphic novel, "One Hundred Demons," is hailed as a breakthrough in the September 2 issue of Time Magazine. "One Hundred Demons deserves a place on the shelf with serious graphic novels like Art Spiegelman's Maus," writes Lev Grossman. Meanwhile, Time.comix columnist Andrew Arnold adds NBM's new hardcover edition of Dave McKean's "Cages" to his syllabus, admiring the book's tome-like qualities and calling it "required reading."
