BRIEF INTERPRETATIONThe latest issue of The Comics Interpreter is temporarily on hold, according to editor Robert Young: "I wait for various apathetic power-brokers to decide my fate at their own snail's pace." Those eager to get a look at the relaunched magazine's contents can order a condensed, digest-sized version of the issue which Young had prepared for SPX. "Basically it's a condensed version of the magazine, still packed with features including the Paul Pope & Hans Rickheit interviews." Copies of the 64-page digest can be ordered via the Comics Interpreter's website for $4 a piece. INFO: The Comics Interpreterposted by Egon on Saturday, October 26, 2002
CARTOON FATWA?The Fresno Bee casts an eye on Larry Gonick's "Cartoon History of the Universe" vol. 3, which details, among other subjects, the birth of Islam. The Bee's reporter, being a journalist, anticipates backlash against Gonick's interpretation of events, particularly perceived depection of Muslim anti-Semitism. "I don't want to be blasphemous," insists the cartoonist, "I just want to be irreverent." INFO: The Fresno Beeposted by Egon on Friday, October 25, 2002
COCONINO CRUIKSHANKThierry Smolderern's Coconino Classics website has recently been updated with new excerpts from Rudolph Toepffer's "Essais d'Autographie" and George Cruikshank's "Comic Almanacks." The "Almanack" pieces are cunningly presented, first as larger tableaus and then as a series of selected and enlarged excerpts, emphasizing the narrative qualities of Cruikshank's crowded compositions. Smolderen plans to digitally publish "all 18 years" of the Almanacks, "in chronological order... This first volume (1835), is 40 screen-pages long, 12 prints + 28 zooms." The Digital Club Network plans to broadcast the 7:00 pm performance live over the internet. Says Kochalka at his talkaboutcomics.com forum, "They're sending someone in to do mulitrack recording of the show, so it should be good quality." KIM, ADRIAN: BOTH ARE BOYSAdrian Tomine and Kim Deitch are the subjects of lengthy, informative interviews promoting their recently published books. The East Bay Express speaks candidly with Tomine and further digs for dirt from past and current friends-of-Adrian to flesh out a portrait of the artist; in the process, the Express writer sketches a brief history of alternative comics. Fantastic Metropolis conducts a more straightforward interview with Kim Deitch who talks about his influences, past and present.
