BELL STAYS NEAR TOWER
"There's never been a more dangerous time to be a journalist at war," writes Guardian editorial cartoonist Steve Bell as he weighs the prospect of being an "embedded cartoonist" in Iraq. "If I were a military-type spin person and I came across somebody in a flak jacket with 'CARTOONIST' plastered across the front, I'd have them shot or sent back home sooner than I could say 'exercising my right of self-defence.'"

POLITICAL COMICS FACE FORWARD
A piece in this week's Forward perceives an emerging political consciousness in comics, focusing on Marvel Comics' "411" mini-series and Seth Tobocman's "Portraits of Israelis and Palestinians." Tobocman's book, upcoming from Soft Skull Press, is drawn from his experience as a volunteer art teacher in the West Bank. "I went to Israel to resolve my own contradictions and animosities and my need to understand it," explains Tobocman. "I wanted to bring something back, to find a way to address these issues without dehumanizing the people, without reducing them to carrion."
