MISSION TO MOSCOW
ABC News covers Moscow's second annual "Comics-Mission" comics festival, spotlighting the growth of independent Russian comics after decades of suppression. Comics critic Ivan Kulikov explains that Soviet use of text-image combinations for propaganda purposes "may explain why so many Russians are still not attracted by the association of pictures and text." Andre-Marc Delocque-Fourcaud, visiting from France's Centre National de la Bande Dessinee et de l'Image, sees "a distinctly Russian style... now emerging," but local cartoonists chafe at the absence of a supportive infrastructure.

TEACHING BD
Poitou-Charente's Pôle National de Ressources (PNR) "Bande Dessinée" plans a three-day seminar on the subject of "Teaching Comics," reports BD Selection. The seminar runs June 2 - 4 and will teach educators to examine comics' narrative and graphic elements within a classroom environment. Seminar registration forms are available online and must be submitted by May 5. The PNRBD of Poitou-Charente is dedicated to elevating comics from a "cultural ghetto that it does not deserve" through analysis and pedagogy.
